What is FSSAI?

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is an independent body operating under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India. Its primary responsibility is to oversee the registration of food licenses. FSSAI is dedicated to establishing and enforcing regulations and standards for food businesses across India. Its core objective is to ensure the safe manufacturing, storage, and handling of food products by Food Business Operators (FBOs).

Upon registration, FBOs receive a FSSAI registration certificate bearing a unique 14-digit license number. This number, along with the FSSAI logo, must be prominently displayed on all food products. The registration period ranges from a minimum of 1 year to a maximum of 5 years, with the option for renewal or re-application as per the provisions outlined in the Food Safety & Standards Act, 2006.



What is applicable to you: FSSAI Registration or FSSAI License?

FSSAI Registration:
Simply called FSSAI Basic Registration. This registration is appropriate for all food businesses and allied activities like Storage, sales, distribution, trading, re-packaging and labelling. Food Businesses having a turnover of less than 12 lacs are eligible to obtain FSSAI Basic Registration. Mostly hawkers, petty retailers, temporary stall holders come under this category. FSSAI License:
There are two types of FSSAI licences.

FSSAI License:

1. State License

Eligibility: Food Businesses having turnover above Rs.12 lacs and up to Rs. 20 crores can opt for State License.

2. Central License

Eligibility: Those in the food business and has a turnover of Rs.20 crores and above are required to obtain Central FSSAI License.

Can I apply for a license which would be applicable throughout in India because I have Food Business Outlets (FBOs) in multiple states?

In case there would be multiple outlets in different cities in India, you will require to apply for a Central License for the registered office of the company/ firm and individual and state licenses for each unit in every state where you have FBOs.

If I need to send a very little consignment outside India, can I go ahead with a Basic or State license as per the turnover of the business?
